So you're wondering... Who is Marvin Moniz?
With decades of leadership experience in aviation, public service, hospitality, and community engagement, Marvin Moniz brings a constant, solutions-focused approach to serving Maui County.
Marvin currently serves as the Maui District Airports Manager for the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, a role he has held since 2007. Throughout his career, he has successfully guided Maui through major challenges including the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2023 wildfires, severe weather events, airline disruptions, and airport emergency incidents. He also oversaw the development of the $360 million consolidated rental car facility and ground transportation project at Kahului Airport, completed ahead of schedule and under budget.
Before leading airport operations for the state, Marvin spent over two decades with Hawaiian Airlines in leadership and customer service roles across Maui and Phoenix, AZ. He played an active role in introducing transpacific flights to Kahului (OGG) Airport and helped strengthen Hawaii’s cultural connections by chartering the annual Arizona Aloha Festival in Arizona during his time as Station Operations Manager at Phoenix Sky Harbor. The Arizona Aloha Festival has grown to be one of the largest Hawaiian and Pacific Island cultural festivals in the continental United States. It’s held annually in Tempe, Arizona and celebrates Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, and broader Polynesian culture through music, hula, food, crafts, and cultural education. Many from across the Western region of the US and Hawaii travel to make this event year after year which is known to report crowds of over 100,000 participants.
Marvin’s background also includes service in the United States Army Reserves, where he served as a Sergeant in the 411 Engineering Battalion, and years working in engineering at the Wailea Beach Hotel.
Born in Hilo, Marvin’s family moved to Maui during his youth and finally setting roots in Wailuku, Maui where he graduated from St. Anthony High School in 1977. Marvin has planted his roots in Maui and continues to give back through his career and volunteer leadership with organizations including the Maui Visitors Bureau, Maui Crime Stoppers, and Hui O Waʻa Kaulua.
